Welcome to FRIDAY and another “Behind the Tweets” column! This week I decided to mix things up so I asked my Twitter followers for volunteers for the column. Nate Riley responded and suggested his buddy Nicholas Gyeney and himself. They are both relative newbies to Twitter (becoming more active on it in March of this year) and I thought this would make an interesting comparison and contrast to many of those I’ve already featured who are established social media experts and leaders who have been using it for years. I think it’s important for those of us who have been immersed in social media for years now to keep in mind how many people are learning and experiencing it for the first time – and may not have the same bias or expectations.
It seems that Nate and Nicholas are both quick learners as they are very proactive in engaging with others – while also sharing and posting on their own. It’ll be fun and interesting to check in on them in 6-9 months to see if and how their perceptions may have changed regarding Twitter and social media in general.
Thanks to both for participating!
How do you two know each other?
We have been friends since we were about 9 years old but recently realized that we work EXTREMELY well together.
Which social media networks do you use consistently?
What was your “Aha” moment regarding social media (when/why did you decide to become engaged)?
When I (@rilo3) was doing research on social media and said “couldn’t hurt.”
When did you first join Twitter? What was your original motivation for doing so?
We both joined twitter back in 2009 but started using it daily in March of this year (2011).
Has the way you use Twitter (and other social media channels) changed? If so, how?
Yes it changes daily.
You are both involved in the entertainment industry. Can you talk about how social media is impacting that world?
It is impacting that world because followers don’t have to go buy magazines to see what their favorite celebrities are doing. It is impacting the “green community” in that way and it also gives you more exposure if you are attempting to make a name for yourself.
Is there a difference between how social media is being used by entertainers vs. companies?
There is a difference but it is ultimately the same thing. Selling yourself, or your product.
Nate: you wear a lot of hats according to your Twitter bio. Can you explain each one a bit? “President/CEO/owner at @ALUXECO, Actor, Film Producer, Entrepreneur, and Web Developer. Making the world a better place a day at a time.”
Wedding DJ – An old buddy from high school and I were caught between opening up a coffee stand or starting a DJ company. The DJ company was less risk, more upside and less work involved. That company was called “Destiny DJ’s.” There were some issues with him involving his other company (ShirtsforGreeks) and I wanted to expand so I left him and started Luxe Co. Nicholas (@gyeney) is also involved in that company, providing videography services.
Actor/Producer – I hadn’t talked to Nicholas in a couple years and reached out to him on Facebook letting him know that I was interested in acting. (He gets those kind of calls or questions a lot) but I stayed very persistent and worked hard, memorizing monologues, performing, taking classes, etc. and it caught his attention. One of his films “Rekindled” lost a little bit of funding and was put on the back burner so he asked me to help him on his next project “The Unknown Son.” I was extremely aggressive, getting in touch with quite a few high profile people to both fund and act in the film. I guess I became a producer the day Nicholas said “you were a born producer, I am going to have David add you to Mirror Images LTD.’s site. Do me a favor and thank your mom for birthing you.” It was a pretty euphoric moment.
Web development – I didn’t want to pay someone to build a website for me so I taught myself how to do it. There was a lot of frustration along the way as you can imagine. I spent about 12 hours trying to fix ONE thing and failed. BUT that is how we all learn. We must fail first to succeed.
Nicholas, now it’s your turn! FILMMAKER. (USC Film School Graduate). 1st feature: The Penitent Man. Current Project: The Unknown Son. Favorite movie: Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
I have wanted to be a filmmaker since my father passed away. We would always watch movies together. You could say that it makes me come alive.
Both: Does Social Media play a big role in your job(s)? Do you have any interesting success stories you can share?
As of right now, no. I don’t think either of us have a big enough following quite yet.
(NOTE TO READERS: Follow both guys!!)
Nate: you’re also involved in the wedding/event business. How has social media impacted these areas? Are people now incorporating social media into their planning?
I have not seen much social media success yet, but hope to soon!
How has social media changed your life in general? Personally and professionally?
It has made me more aware of what’s going on in the world. Who needs to watch the news now?
How do you manage your followers and social media channels? Do you have any favorite tools?
What is your bold prediction for social media in the next 2 years?
It will grow even more. It will be facebook’s main partner in crime.
How do you use Twitter? How about Facebook? Do they serve similar or different roles for you?
Same way. They are both great for marketing. Twitter is kind of an endless stream of information to see what’s going on in the world and Facebook is more of a friends site but can also be great for business.
Do you use Quora, Foursquare or Yelp? How about Linkedin?
Quora, no. Foursquare, Yelp, and LinkedIn- yes
How do you decide who you’re going to follow or become friends with in the various social media channels. Facebook?
#wedding #dj etc. Using keywords.
What has been your most memorable social media experience?
Meeting people from all over the world.
Are a fan of any sport? If so, who are your favorite teams?
I love all sports… Football, Seahwaks. Baseball, Mariners. Anything Seattle. Basketball, Miami Heat.
Have you met any fun/famous celebs?
Yes. Quite a few. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Val Kilmer, Michael Clark Duncan, Andrew Keegan, Michael Biehn, David Anders, Mack Strong, Armand Assante, Lance Henriksen, and more to come!
Place you might want to visit (and will Tweet from)?
Funniest Social Media moment?
Can’t think of one right off the top of my head
Biggest Social Media pet peeve?
Too much crap and spam. Too many weirdos.
Any parting shots?
Thanks for the interview and taking time to put this together for us!
